Double

I stopped collecting records and moved to CDs at some point in the 80s. I hate to admit it, but the reasoning was how convenient the CDs were in their smaller jewel cases and the fact that I could load several CDs into my new Pioneer player and listen and listen and listen without the interruption of flipping or changing the record every twenty minutes.

I admit it. I’m always looking for creature comfort, even at the expense of sonic quality.

Then, around ten or fifteen years later, along came computer music. I started with a player on my PC called WinAmp. I think it is probably still around. I wasn’t buying music online, but I was able to slowly “record” all my CDs onto my computer. Now I didn’t need to get off the couch even to put a bunch of CDs in my player. Plus I could count and sort and locate all my music with a few clicks on the keyboard.

Eventually my brother-in-law Chuck talked me into using iTunes. Shortly after that I got my first iPod. As the saying goes, it was all downhill from there. Today I can travel with my entire music library, consisting of 1326 albums by 739 artists, on the hard disk in the Blue Bus.

I can’t say how many songs because the latest version of iTunes no longer shows the song count on the bottom of the screen. (Why do they keep “improving??” these programs?).

I haven’t bought many albums since that initial switch to CDs. A few dozen on eBay as I completed my collection of Casey Anderson music. I recorded Casey during the last few years of his career, and I wanted to have everything he had ever published. I bought a few other albums on eBay and a few at used record stores, but now my collection is focused on digital copies.

I have 13 large cases, each with 60-70 albums, stored away under the stairs. Included in this vinyl collection are several DOUBLE ALBUMS. I got them out when I was home in November while getting all the Christmas decorations. I didn't spend a lot of time digging into the albums, but I found several old double albums and that got me thinking.

Way back, when music was just born, and mostly performed by cave men … you know: 1960. For you TV Babies (that’s anyone born after 1963) albums used to just be a hit song or two and the rest was filler. That’s just how the hit single marketplace was … well … marketed. Even when folks from England started making record albums, it didn’t change much.

Then those four Liverpool lads started creating albums that were filled with good music. Who knew that would work. (My theory is that all they produced is good music, so naturally the albums were full, not filled.)

Up until that time, typically, albums had a high percentage of filler. After all, odds were two or three to one. One hit song … a whole side of filler.

This was also the era of the 3 minute (if not shorter) song. People thought that was the only length appropriate for radio play. But this idea began to change with the advent of FM radio and soon whole album sides were being played on the air. Before you knew it, bands started putting lots of good songs on albums. And the songs got longer. Before you could say "top forty," they started to run out of room on the time-limited platters.

There were other things cool about albums that 45 rpm singles didn't share. Besides their better sonic qualities, albums also had wonderful art work and liner notes. Some albums opened like a book. There was only one disc, but there were two "pages." Now you could really add the art, graphics, and liner notes. A whole industry was born with albums coming with posters and song books and picture books and just about anything you or the musicians could imagine.

Of course, the American music scene being what it is, you know that, before you could snap your fingers, someone figured out the “double album.” Now you really got a work of art. Four whole sides of music. (Sometimes even more.) And all that wonderful real estate to put pictures and graphics and even books. At first it was just an accident … too much music to fit, so they added a second disc. Then it became purposeful as the artists learned to tell stories and the "concept album" was born.

In the mid 1960s the idea of a double album was seen as groundbreaking, a landmark recording. However, since the introduction of the CD, the double album has become the norm; the norm in the sense that 2 vinyl albums ran to about 80 minutes on average. In many cases the filling of a CD with close to a double album’s worth of material has produced too many albums that are more "filler than killer" once again.

Here I am in Oregon with nothing but my digital music collection. That is one advantage, bits travel well. Nonetheless, I’m thinking about that vinyl collection under the stairs back home. Particularly I’m thinking about my double albums. A quick sort by release date and I had a complete chronology of the ground breaking double albums.

I’ve written before about the magic sixties decade of music. A period of ten years that has never been seen before or since. As I described, more accurately, the period of maximum goodness was from about 1963 to 1973, still a decade, just not very “powers of ten-ish.” These double albums I am thinking about trailed that period by about five years. There is some deep cosmic meaning there, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

While I try to invent my personal music history chronology, here is the dated sequence. These are the greatest double vinyl albums of all time (IMHO), and interesting to find a comparable large release on CD. No, just as video killed the radio song, CDs really killed the Double Album. Now they’re all too long with too many songs, and it just isn’t like it used to be. A lot of filler and not much killer.

July 1966

Blonde on Blonde by Bob (Robert) Dylan. Blonde on Blonde is the seventh studio album by the singer-songwriter, released on May 16, 1966 on Columbia Records. Recorded in New York and then Nashville … and then Nashville again.

Recording sessions began in New York in October 1965 with numerous backing musicians, including members of Dylan's live backing band, The Hawks. Though sessions continued until January 1966, they yielded only one track that made it onto the final album — "One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)." At producer Bob Johnston's suggestion, Dylan, keyboardist Al Kooper, and guitarist Robbie Robertson moved to the CBS studios in Nashville, Tennessee. These sessions, augmented by some of Nashville's top session musicians, were more fruitful, and in February and March all the remaining songs for the album were recorded.

The album peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart in the USA, where it eventually went double-platinum, and reached No. 3 in the UK.

Dylan mixed the album in Los Angeles in early April, before he departed on the Australian leg of his 1966 world tour. As author Sean Wilentz writes in Bob Dylan in America, it was at this point it became "obvious that the riches of the Nashville sessions could not fit onto a single LP," and they had "produced enough solid material to demand an oddly configured double album, the first of its kind in contemporary popular music." According to producer Steve Berkowitz, who supervised the reissue of Dylan's LPs in mono as The Original Mono Recordings in 2010, Johnston told him that they carefully worked on the mono mix for about three or four days whereas the stereo mix was finished in about four hours. This was typical of the age when AM radio play was the focus, and the stereo mix was often just left to the engineers!

The cover photo of Blonde on Blonde shows a 12-by-12 inch close-up portrait of Dylan. The double album gatefold sleeve opens to form a 12-by-26 inch photo of the artist, at three quarter length. The artist's name and the album's title only appear on the spine. A sticker was applied to the shrink wrap to promote the release's two hit singles, "I Want You" and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35."

July 1968

Next on my list is Cream’s Wheels of Fire. This band didn’t put out a lot of albums, so a double is twice as nice. It consists of a studio and a live record. It reached #3 in the United Kingdom and #1 in the United States, becoming the first platinum-selling double album.

Cream's third album was planned to be a double album on which Atco Records' producer Felix Pappalardi and the group would include several live performances. The group and producer Felix had, in July and August 1967, recorded studio material at IBC Studios in London, and at Atlantic Studios in New York City during September and October of the same year. Additional studio material was recorded at Atlantic Studios in January and February 1968, during a break from the band's heavy touring.

The following month, Pappalardi ordered a mobile recording studio in Los Angeles to be shipped to the Fillmore auditorium and the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Six shows were recorded in San Francisco by Pappalardi and recording engineer Bill Halverson, and extra performances not included on Wheels of Fire ended up on Live Cream, and Live Cream Volume II.

In an oddity, even for rock and roll, the album was also released as two, single albums, one with the live music and one with the studio tracks.

October 1968

Electric Ladyland is the third and final studio album by English-American rock band the Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in October 1968 by Reprise Records. The double album was the only record from the band produced by Jimi. By mid-November, it had charted at number one in the United States, where it spent two weeks at the top spot. Electric Ladyland was the Experience's most commercially successful release and their only number one album. It peaked at number six in the UK, where it spent 12 weeks on the chart.

Electric Ladyland included a cover of the Bob Dylan song, "All Along the Watchtower," which became the Experience's highest-selling single and their only top 40 hit in the US, peaking at number 20; the single reached number five in the UK.

Although it confounded critics upon its release, Ladyland has since been viewed as Hendrix's best work and one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Recorded in London and New York at the newly opened Record Plant Studios, with Chas Chandler as producer and engineers Eddie Kramer and Gary Kellgren. As recording progressed, Chandler became increasingly frustrated with Hendrix's perfectionism and his demands for repeated takes. Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell recorded well over 50 takes of "Gypsy Eyes" over three sessions. Hendrix allowed numerous friends and guests to join them in the studio, which contributed to a chaotic and crowded environment in the control room and led Chandler to sever his professional relationship with Hendrix.

Besides the Experience regulars, Mitchell and Redding, the album included Jack Cassady, Steve Winwood on organ, and B.B. King, Al Kooper, and Elvin Bishop.

November 1968

The self titled The Beatles is the ninth studio album by the English rock group. It is a double album and commonly known as the White Album, as it has no graphics or text other than the band's name embossed (and, on the early LP and CD releases, a serial number) on its plain white sleeve.

Most of the songs on the album were written during early 1968 at a Transcendental Meditation course in Rishikesh, India. Although the group's experience of the course was mixed, the lack of external influences and drugs sparked the band's creativity and they returned to England with around 40 new songs.

They regrouped at George Harrison's house, Kinfauns, in May and recorded demos of 26 songs, enough for a double album. The group returned to Abbey Road Studios to record the new material, with sessions lasting through to mid October, but their experiences in Rishikesh did not help motivate them in the studio. Because the Beatles had unlimited recording time, there was little attempt to rehearse anything as a group, so everything was captured on tape, after which they would overdub voices and additional instruments.

Arguments broke out between the Beatles, and people in the studio saw John Lennon and Paul McCartney quarrel with one another repeatedly. The feuds intensified when Lennon's new partner, Yoko Ono, started attending the sessions. In addition, McCartney was not happy about the avant-garde piece "Revolution 9," while Lennon disliked several of McCartney's songs.

After a series of problems, including producer George Martin taking a sudden leave of absence and engineer Geoff Emerick quitting, Ringo Starr left the band briefly in August, and consequently did not play on some tracks. The same tensions continued throughout the following year, leading to the group's eventual disbandment in April 1970.

Around the same time, the group's self-belief that they could do anything led to the formation of a new multimedia business corporation Apple Corps, an enterprise that drained the group financially with a series of financially unsuccessful projects. The open-ended studio time led to a new way of working out songs. Instead of tightly rehearsing a backing track, as had happened in previous sessions, the group would simply record all the rehearsals and jamming onto tape, then select which performance had been best to overdub. Harrison's song "Not Guilty" was left off the album despite recording 102 takes.

Eric Clapton played the lead on Harrison’s composition, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and Yoko did backup vocals on two tracks.

It was The Beatles first studio album in almost eighteen months and the album achieved huge commercial success. Capitol Records sold over 3.3 million copies of the White Album to stores within the first four days of the album's release.


April 1969

Chicago Transit Authority is the self-titled debut album by the Chicago-based rock band Chicago Transit Authority, later known simply as Chicago.

At the band's 1967 inception, it was initially called "The Missing Links." Then, according to Robert Lamm on an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard devoted to the making of the album, the name was changed to "The Big Thing" (occasionally performed in areas outside Chicago and Milwaukee as "The Big Sounds" due to some venues complaining about the double entendre that the name "The Big Thing" also alluded to), before adopting the name The Chicago Transit Authority when the producer James William Guercio took them on in 1968. Their trademark was fusing brass and jazz with a soulful rock and roll feel and Guercio instinctively felt that this would prove successful, lobbying for his label to give them a try.

The Chicago Transit Authority band were signed to Columbia Records late that year and recorded their first album in late January. While Guercio had recently produced Blood, Sweat & Tears' second album (which proved to be a huge smash), he did so to raise capital for his band. By the end of The Chicago Transit Authority's sessions, it was clear that the album would have to be a double. Very skeptical, seeing as the band had no track record, Columbia only agreed to the concept if the group would take a royalty cut.

In 1974 The album was also mixed in quadraphonic sound and released on SQ encoded LP and Dolby Quadraphonic 8-Track. In 2010 Rhino Handmade re-released the original quadraphonic mix of the album on a limited edition DTS DVD.

Released in April 1969, The Chicago Transit Authority (sometimes informally referred to simply as "CTA") proved to be an immediate hit, reaching #17 in the US and #9 in the UK. While critical reaction was also strong, the album initially failed to produce any hit singles, with the group seen as an album-oriented collective.


May 1969

Tommy is the fourth studio album by the English rock band The Who, a double album first released in May 1969. The album was mostly composed by guitarist Pete Townshend as a rock opera that tells the story about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy, including his experiences with life and the relationship with his family.

Townshend came up with the concept of Tommy after being introduced to the work of Meher Baba, and attempted to translate Baba's teachings into music. Recording on the album began in September 1968, but took six months to complete as material needed to be arranged and re-recorded in the studio. Tommy was acclaimed upon its release by critics, who hailed it as the Who's breakthrough, although its critical standing diminished slightly in later years. Nonetheless, it has since been viewed by several writers as an important and influential rock album.

The album was recorded onto eight track tape, which allowed various instruments to be overdubbed. Townshend used several guitars in the studio, but made particular use of the Gibson J-200 acoustic and the Gibson SG. As well as their usual instruments, Townshend played piano and organ and bassist John Entwistle doubled on french horn. Keith Moon used a new double bass drum kit owned by roadie Tony Haslam after Premier had refused to loan him any more equipment due to continual abuse.

Though Townshend wrote the majority of the material, the arrangements came from the entire band. Singer Roger Daltrey later said that Townshend often came in with a half-finished demo recording, adding "we probably did as much talking as we did recording, sorting out arrangements and things." Townshend asked Entwistle to write two songs ("Cousin Kevin" and "Fiddle About") that covered the darker themes of bullying and abuse. "Tommy's Holiday Camp" was Moon's suggestion of what religious movement Tommy could lead. Moon got the songwriting credit for suggesting the idea, though the music was composed and played by Townshend. A significant amount of material had a lighter style than earlier recordings, with greater prominence put on the vocals. Moon later said, "It was, at the time, very un-Wholike. A lot of the songs were soft. We never played like that.”

The album was commercially successful, reaching No. 2 in the UK album charts, and No. 4 in the US.

November 1970

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is the only studio album by blues rock band Derek and the Dominos. Released in November 1970, it is best known for its title track, "Layla." The album is often regarded as Eric Clapton's greatest musical achievement. The other band members were Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass, and special guest performer Duane Allman on lead and slide guitar on 11 of the 14 songs.

The collaboration that created Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, Derek and the Dominos, grew out of Eric Clapton's frustration with the hype associated with the supergroups Cream and the short-lived Blind Faith. Following the latter's dissolution, he joined Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, whom he had come to know while they were the opening act on Blind Faith's US tour in the summer of 1969.

A serendipitous event brought Clapton and guitarist Duane Allman together shortly after the Dominos had begun recording at Criteria Studios in August 1970. Veteran producer Tom Dowd was working on the Allman Brothers second album, Idlewild South, when the studio received a phone call that Clapton was bringing the Dominos to Miami to record. Upon hearing this, Allman indicated that he would love to drop by and watch, if Clapton approved.

After the show, Allman asked if he could come by the studio to watch some recording sessions, but Clapton invited him there directly, saying: "Bring your guitar; you got to play!" Overnight, the two bonded; Dowd reported that they "were trading licks, they were swapping guitars, they were talking shop and information and having a ball — no holds barred, just admiration for each other's technique and facility." Clapton wrote later in his autobiography that he and Allman were inseparable during the sessions in Florida; he talked about Allman as the "musical brother I'd never had but wished I did.”

Atco Records issued Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in November 1970 in the United States, with a UK release following in December, on Polydor. The album failed to chart in the United Kingdom, while in the US, it peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Top LPs chart.

July 1971

At Fillmore East is the first live album by the Allman Brothers Band, and their third release overall. Produced by Tom Dowd, the album was released in July 1971 in the United States by Capricorn Records. As the title suggests, the recording took place at New York City's music venue Fillmore East, run by concert promoter Bill Graham. It was recorded over the course of three nights in March 1971 and features the band performing extended jam versions of songs such as "Whipping Post" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." When first commercially released, it was issued as a double LP with just seven songs comprising four vinyl sides.

At Fillmore East was the band's artistic and commercial breakthrough, and has been considered by some critics to be one of the greatest live albums in rock music; certainly one of the greatest live albums.

The Allman Brothers Band had first played Fillmore East in December 1969, opening for Blood, Sweat & Tears for three nights. Promoter Bill Graham enjoyed the band and promised to have them back soon. In January 1970, the band opened for Buddy Guy and B.B. King at San Francisco's Fillmore West, and one month later at Fillmore East supporting the Grateful Dead. In 1970, Duane Allman told disc jockey Ed Shane, "You know, we get kind of frustrated doing the [studio] records, and I think, consequently, our next album will be … a live recording, to get some of that natural fire on it." "We were not intentionally trying to buck the system, but keeping each song down to 3:14 just didn't work for us," remembered vocalist Gregg Allman. "And we realized that the audience was a big part of what we did, which couldn't be duplicated in a studio. A lightbulb finally went off; we needed to make a live album.”

On June 27, the Fillmore East closed, and the band were invited to play a final invitation-only concert, along with Edgar Winter, the Beach Boys and Country Joe McDonald. The Beach Boys initially refused on performing unless they headlined the event, but Graham refused, telling them that the Allman Brothers would be closing the show, and they were free to leave if they disagreed.

May 1972

Exile on Main St is a double album by English rock band The Rolling Stones. It was released on May 12, 1972 by Rolling Stones Records. The album's music incorporates rock and roll, blues, soul, country, and gospel genres.

Even though the album is often described as being Richards' finest moment, as Exile is often thought to reflect his vision for a raw, rootsy rock sound, Jagger was already expressing his boredom with rock and roll in several interviews at the time of the album's release. With Richards' effectiveness seriously undermined by his dependence on heroin, the group's subsequent 1970s releases — directed largely by Jagger — would experiment to varying degrees with other musical genres, moving away from the roots-based sound of Exile on Main St.

Preceded by the UK and US Top 10 hit "Tumbling Dice," Exile on Main St was released in May 1972. It was an immediate commercial success, reaching No. 1 worldwide just as the band embarked on their celebrated 1972 American Tour. Their first American tour in three years, it featured many songs from the new album. "Happy," sung by Richards, would be a Top 30 US hit later that summer.

October 1973

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the seventh studio album by singer-songwriter Elton John. Released in 1973, it has come to be regarded as one of his best and most popular albums.

Recorded at the Château d'Hérouville, the double album contains the Marilyn Monroe tribute "Candle in the Wind" as well as three other successful singles: "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.”

Under the working titles of Vodka and Tonics and Silent Movies, Talking Pictures, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics in two and a half weeks, with John composing most of the music in three days while staying at the Pink Flamingo Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica.

According to the album's producer, Gus Dudgeon, the album was not planned as a two-record collection. In total, John and Taupin composed 22 tracks for the album, of which 18 (counting "Funeral for a Friend" and "Love Lies Bleeding" as two discrete tracks) were used, enough that it was released as a double album, John's first (three more such albums followed up to 2011). The songs, mostly around the theme of nostalgia for a more humble childhood and an older American culture as seen through eyes of the movies, included "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," the latter based on memories of a pub Taupin frequented when younger.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (often shortened to The Lamb) is a double concept album recorded and released in 1974 by the British progressive rock band Genesis. It was their sixth studio album, and the last to feature original singer and frontman Peter Gabriel.

The album tells the surreal story of a half Puerto Rican juvenile delinquent named Rael living in New York City, who is swept underground to face bizarre creatures and nightmarish dangers to rescue his brother John. Several of the story's occurrences and places were derived from Peter Gabriel's dreams, and the protagonist's name is a play on his surname (Rael = Gabriel). In reference to the live performance of "it" (where Gabriel appears onstage with an identically dressed mannequin), Phil Collins remarked that the entire concept was about split personality.

Following their Selling England by the Pound tour, the band went on retreat to Headley Grange to write and develop their next album. Used previously by Bad Company and Led Zeppelin, this was where the band hoped living together away from other distractions would help inspire creativity and develop unity between the members. The house, however, was in poor condition and infested by rats. Several band members had difficulty sleeping, believing the house was haunted

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway reached number 10 in the UK, and number 15 in Canada, while nearly cracking the US Top 40, reaching number 41 and eventually going Gold, although it met with mixed reviews.

The release of the album was accompanied by a very elaborate tour that reenacted the album's story. There were a lot of technical errors and the tour was very frustrating for the entire band. For example, some of the stage costumes that Gabriel wore prevented proper miking and there were issues with the slide photographs played in the background. At one point, an over enthusiastic explosion literally stopped the performance. The band was frustrated that the reviews focused on the stage show instead of the music performance … always a problem with complex tour designs. No complete performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was recorded, although several pieces were filmed, including some bootleg footage taken by audience members.

Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by rock band Led Zeppelin, released on February 24, 1975 as a double album two years after their previous studio album. The band wrote and recorded eight songs at Headley Grange; these eight songs stretched beyond the typical length of an LP. The band decided to make Physical Graffiti a double album by including unreleased tracks from earlier recording sessions: one outtake from Led Zeppelin III; three from Led Zeppelin IV; and three from Houses of the Holy including its unused title track.

The first attempt to record songs for Physical Graffiti took place in November 1973. The recording equipment consisted of Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio. However, these sessions came to a halt quickly and the studio time was turned over to the band Bad Company, who used it to record songs for their self-titled debut album.

Spanning several years of recording, the album featured forays into a range of musical styles, including hard rock ("Custard Pie," "The Rover," "The Wanton Song," "Night Flight," "Sick Again," "Houses of the Holy"), eastern-influenced orchestral rock ("Kashmir"), progressive rock ("In the Light"), driving funk ("Trampled Under Foot"), acoustic rock and roll ("Boogie with Stu," "Black Country Woman"), love ballad ("Ten Years Gone"), blues rock ("In My Time of Dying"), soft rock ("Down by the Seaside"), and acoustic guitar instrumental ("Bron-Yr-Aur"). The wide range of Physical Graffiti is also underlined by the fact that it contains both the longest and shortest studio recordings by Led Zeppelin. "In My Time of Dying" clocks in at eleven minutes and five seconds, and "Bron-Yr-Aur" is two minutes and six seconds. With the exception of "The Battle of Evermore" on their fourth album, it is also the only Led Zeppelin album to feature John Paul Jones playing additional guitar on some tracks.

The album's sleeve design features a photograph of a New York City tenement block, with interchanging window illustrations. The two five-story buildings photographed for the album cover are located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York City. The original photograph underwent a number of tweaks to arrive at the final image. The fifth floor of the building had to be cropped out to fit the square album cover format.

Physical Graffiti was the band's first release on their own Swan Song Records label, which had been launched in May 1974. Until this point, all of Led Zeppelin's albums had been released on Atlantic Records. The album was a commercial and critical success, having built up a huge advance order, and when eventually released it reached No. 1 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart.

Frampton Comes Alive! is a double live album by Peter Frampton released in 1976, and one of the best-selling live albums in the United States. Following four solo albums with little commercial success, Frampton Comes Alive! was a breakthrough for the artist.

The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 the week ending April 10, 1976, and was in the top spot for a total of 10 weeks. It was the best-selling album of 1976, selling over 6 million copies in the US and becoming one of the best-selling live albums to date, with estimated sales of 11 million worldwide.

The album was recorded in summer and fall 1975, primarily at Winterland in San Francisco and the Long Island Arena in Commack, New York, as well as a concert on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in Plattsburgh, New York. The Winterland recordings were recorded on a 24 track master recorder. Other concerts were recorded on a 16 track recorder.

Songs in the Key of Life is the eighteenth album by recording artist Stevie Wonder, released on September 28, 1976, by Motown Records. It was the culmination of his “classic period” albums. The album was recorded primarily at Crystal Sounds studio in Hollywood, with some sessions recorded at the Record Plant in Hollywood, the Record Plant in Sausalito, and The Hit Factory in New York City.

An ambitious double LP with a four-song bonus EP, Songs in the Key of Life became among the best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of his career.

A total of 130 musicians were on the album, but Wonder’s preeminence was evident. Among the people present during the sessions, there were legendary figures of R&B, soul, and jazz music — Herbie Hancock played Fender Rhodes on “As,” George Benson played electric guitar on “Another Star,” and Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams added backing vocals on “Ordinary Pain.”

Highly anticipated, the album surpassed all commercial expectations. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart on October 8, 1976, becoming only the third album in history to achieve that feat and the first by an American artist (after British singer/composer Elton John’s albums.) Songs in the Key of Life became the second best-selling album of 1977 in the US, only behind Fleetwood Mac’s blockbuster Rumours, and was certified as a diamond album by the RIAA for sales of ten million copies in the US alone.

Here, My Dear is the fifteenth studio album by music artist Marvin Gaye, released December 15, 1978, on Motown subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place between 1977 and 1978 at Gaye's personal studios, Marvin Gaye Studios in Los Angeles, California. The album was notable for its subject matter being dedicated to the fallout of Gaye's marriage to his first wife, Anna Gordy Gaye.

Marvin Gaye was going through a personal crisis in the summer of 1976. In November of 1975, Gaye's estranged first wife, Anna, sued Marvin for divorce, claiming irreconcilable differences and seeking money in palimony for support of their adopted son, Marvin Gaye III. After months of delays, in March of 1977, the singer's attorney Curtis Shaw wanted to end divorce proceedings and convinced Marvin to give up half of the percentage of album royalties he would earn from his next Motown album to Anna. The Gayes' divorce was finalized in June.

When Marvin set to start production on the record, he said he figured he just do a "quickie record — nothing heavy, nothing even good," stating, "why should I break my neck when Anna was going to wind up with the money anyway?" But as Gaye lived with the notion of doing an album, the more it fascinated him, stating he felt he "owed the public my best effort." Gaye stated he did the record "out of deep passion," noting he "sang and sang until I drained myself of everything I'd lived through." The record was completed in three months, but the singer held it back for over a year, scared of letting it be released.

When Here, My Dear was released in the end of 1978, it was panned by consumers and critics alike, who called the album "bizarre" and “un-commercial." The album's lack of success angered Gaye to the point that he refused to promote it any further. In 1994, the album was re-released due to increased attention on Marvin's life to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the singer's untimely death, and reached number-one on Billboard's R&B catalog chart. The original album peaked at number four R&B and number twenty-six pop, becoming Gaye's lowest-charting studio album of the 1970s.

I’m not sure what the self-requested album front photo of Marvin in a toga means. I’m no Sigmund Freud. But the collapsing temple labeled “Matrimony” on the back side is easy to decode. I’ll leave you readers to search the used record bins for a copy and check out the large inner album art work. Marvin was in a confused state of mind, as it is readily apparent in all aspects of this album.

Now, some thirty plus years later, this album has finally received the respect and placement that I thought it deserved originally. It is now listed in many top 500 albums of all time, and, to quote Dave Ritz on the liner notes, “Soul music doesn't get any deep, darker, or more personal than this.” He goes on to say that it is at once, "self-serving, self-justifying, [and] self-pitying.”

The Wall is the eleventh studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It is the last studio album released with the classic lineup of Gilmour, Waters, Wright, and Mason before keyboardist Richard Wright left the band and the Gilmour / Waters feud began. Released as a double album on November 30, 1979, it was supported by a tour with elaborate theatrical effects, and adapted into a 1982 feature film, Pink Floyd — The Wall.

The Wall is a concept album and explores themes of abandonment and personal isolation. The album is a rock opera that follows Pink, a character whom bassist and lyricist Roger Waters modeled after himself and the band's original leader, Syd Barrett. Pink's life begins with the loss of his father during the Second World War and continues with abuse from his schoolteachers, an overprotective mother, and the breakdown of his marriage; all contribute to his eventual self-imposed isolation from society, represented by a metaphorical wall.

The album was recorded in several locations. In France, Super Bear Studios was used between January and July 1979, with Waters recording his vocals at the nearby Studio Miraval. Michael Kamen supervised the orchestral arrangements at CBS Studios in New York, in September. Over the next two months the band used Cherokee Studios and The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. A plan to work with the Beach Boys at the Sundance Productions studio in Los Angeles was cancelled. For a week in November they worked at the Producers Workshop, also in Los Angeles.

This hectic change in locations and geography combined with issues with producers, including a short period where keyboardist Richard Wright produced, added to the friction within the band. Waters's relationship with Wright broke down. Ultimately, Wright left the band — or was fired depending on the account. He was hired back as a salaried musician for the tour following the release of the album. Due to the large cost of the complicated stage production, everyone lost money except for Wright who was on salary.

That relationship wasn’t the only one strained by this epic album. David Gilmour later stated, “I think things like ‘Comfortably Numb’ were the last embers of mine and Roger's ability to work collaboratively together.”

Despite the friction and cost overruns of the tour, the album The Wall was released in the UK on November 30, 1979, and about a week later in the US. Coinciding with its release Waters was interviewed by veteran DJ Tommy Vance, who played the album in its entirety on BBC Radio 1.

Critical opinion of its content ranged from The Village Voice critic Robert Christgau's "too-kitschy minimal maximalism with sound effects and speech fragments” and Rolling Stone writer Kurt Loder's "a stunning synthesis of Waters's by now familiar thematic obsessions,” to Melody Maker's "I'm not sure whether it's brilliant or terrible, but I find it utterly compelling." Nevertheless the album topped the Billboard charts for 15 weeks, and in 1999 was certified 23x platinum. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time in the US, between 1979 and 1990 selling over 19 million copies worldwide. These results place it second only to the phenomenal success of Dark Side of the Moon.

Digital vs. Analog

Digital vs. Analog. This was and is the great debate. When I worked for A.R.F. Products, a research and devel-opment lab in Boulder, Colorado, right after I got out of the Navy, all our work was analog. My personal projects were in the field of R.F. or “Radio Frequency.” My primary project was the AR-9 and AR-10. Both were command receivers used in aerospace applications. These little radios were used for “command destruct” reception and served on cruise missiles and the space shuttle launch system.

Although we were using solid-state devices, including the very latest versions of Field Effect Transistor amplifier stages, it was entirely analog. Even decoding the tones in the command signals was done by phase-locked loops contained on chips developed for detecting Ma Bell dial signals from the new, at that time, push button phones.

All my training up to that point had been in the analog realm. That’s the area where small changes in voltage and current represent the signal. It was the time of meters with little red needles and dials. Soon I was enrolled in college studying the mathematics and physics behind the small electronic devices. There I encountered the digital domain. The realm of numbers … whole numbers.

By assigning one of two values to a voltage or current, the small variations no longer mattered. These discrete values were assigned a mathematical “one” or “zero,” no in-between. Based on voltages that swung high or low, these were decoded in a very certain way. No small doubt. Soon meters were replaced by digital readouts. Like the difference between the automobile speedometer and the odometer, no interpretation was required. No tiny marks between 50 and 60 to recognize if you were over the speed limit of 55.

Later, when I began my career teaching electronics at the college level, I chose digital courses to become my area of expertise. So I’ve lived in both worlds. A living arrangement I had already experienced as I made the transition from Navy basic training in vacuum tubes to the more common in the late sixties solid state and transistor circuits. So, again, I made a transition from one technology to another.

While the music reproduction industry had seen steady improvements and new technology from the 78 rpm records of the forties to the 33 1/3 rpm Long Playing album of the sixties, from mono to stereo and even beyond with the advent of Quadraphonic, all these technical advances were basically analog. In fact, if you looked at a groove in a record with a microscope, you would see a reduced image of the actual sound waveform as clearly as if you used an oscilloscope to view the voltage waveform. Whether recorded in magnetic transitions on recording tape or undulations on a vinyl groove, this was a real-world, analog picture of the music.

It suffered from the same problems as all analog: noise and interference, scratches and pops, dust and wear. The frequency response was twisted to fit the medium using ingenious RIAA equalization standards to improve the quality and deal with the imperfections.

But music can also be digitized. That’s really what a musical score is — sheet music. Music notation turns the sound into discrete notes that are then reproduced via the skill of the musician … a human being. Old fashioned player pianos with their paper rolls filled with holes are discrete — a word akin to “digital.” With a player piano, no human hand is need to interpret the music.

Naturally, an electronic version of this discrete player was due. The development of lasers and so-called “optical disks” (or discs) gave the medium. Now all that was needed was the method.

Sony and Philips set up a joint task force of engineers to design a new digital audio disc. After a year of experimentation and discussion, the team produced the “Red Book CD-DA” standard. First published in 1980, the specification was formally adopted by the IEC as an international standard in 1987, with various amendments becoming part of the standard in 1996.

Philips coined the term "compact disc" in line with another audio product, the compact cassette, and contributed the general manufacturing process, based on video LaserDisc technology. Philips also contributed eight-to-fourteen modulation (EFM), which offers a certain resilience to defects such as scratches and fingerprints, while Sony contributed the error-correction method, CIRC.

The Compact Disc story, told by a former member of the task force, gives background information on the many technical decisions made, including the choice of the sampling frequency, playing time, and disc diameter.

The logical format of an audio CD is described in that document produced in 1980 by the format's joint creators. The document is known colloquially as the “Red Book” after the color of its cover. The format is a two-channel 16-bit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) encoding at a 44.1 kHz sampling rate per channel. Four-channel sound was to be an allowable option within the Red Book format, but has never been implemented. Monaural audio has no existing standard on a Red Book CD; mono-source material thus is usually presented as two identical channels in a standard Red Book stereo track (mirrored mono).

Interpreting the engineering specifications, the 44.1 kHz (thousand Hz or cycles-per-second) yields a maximum bandwidth from near zero to 22 kHz. Actually, that isn’t a bad bandwidth and exceeds the bandwidth of all but the highest quality turntables for LPs.

The Nyquist (or Nyquist-Shannon) theorem gives us the expected bandwidth for a given sampling frequency. However there are concerns with aliasing, which in CDs is eliminated by filtering the top frequency on playback. That makes this 22 kHz a hard stop for maximum frequency response. There are also concerns with transient response and phase shifting, but these same concerns apply to LP reproduction since RIAA equalization uses capacitance and inductance which can cause phase shifts too.

My personal opinion, which doesn’t really count for much, is that the frequency response of CDs is adequate and not really the area of concern with regards to high fidelity and faithful reproduction of the music spectrum. Limitations of the human ear … especially such an aged ear as mine … limit enjoyment of high frequency signals more than the CD specifications. Maybe dogs can hear those highs, but most humans can’t

Of much greater concern is the 16-bit encoding. This limits the discrete volume or loudness levels to a range of 216 or 65,536 values, while analog can, at least in theory, record an infinite number of values from zero to maximum. This limitation determine the dynamic range or the level of the softest and loudest sound. In addition, this limited number of values to represent the instantaneous voltage values produces a crudeness in representation akin to rounding errors. It just isn't a very precise representation due to the small encoding word size. Volume range is purposely reduced to preserve resolution.

To maintain a smooth transition from soft to loud, CDs typically raise the soft passages and limit the loud passages. This, and other considerations including musical style have led to amplitude compression of the music dynamic range. This occurs with analog recording too, but it has become almost a sonic trademark of modern music. Just where the art ends and the technology begins is becoming quite confused. (One reason that commercials seem louder than the program sound it a heavy level of amplitude compression. That makes the overall impression of volume seem loud.)

Analog also limits the softest portions due to surface noise. And the dynamic range of human hearing is limited too, and greatly affected by the absolute volume or sound pressure. Still, this is a major deficiency of the CD standard when compared to other recording techniques.

In response, many new and improved digital recording methods, increase the coding length to at least 20 if not 24 bits to vastly improve dynamic range. Rock and roll is not known for dynamic range. It is usually loud and louder. But symphonic music is more likely to have a wide range from the soft to the loud passages, and is quite limited by the basic CD bit length.

It was these technical choices by Sony and Phillips, made based on the capability of the technology available in the late 70s and various engineering concerns such as cost to create discs and cost of players to reproduce and marketing considerations in the 80s that determined the technical choices.

The frequency band and dynamic range of the CD is set in stone. It can not be changed without making all the current players obsolete. A later standard that allows for higher resolution was to come and is mostly associated with video and movie soundtracks. These DVDs could record music digitally with higher resolution, but the vast majority of modern music on optical discs is stuck with 70s CD technology that is now 40 years old. It is the digital equivalent of the wax cylinders Edison first used to invent recording and the home music player in the 1800s.

There are many advantages to digital recording including the near elimination of noise, interference, and wear as well as the ease of reproducing and copying without changing the fidelity or adding noise. But digital systems are rigid in their design. It is like a book written in French. It can only be read by a person with a knowledge of French, and won’t make any sense to a Chinese reader, even if Chinese were proven to be a more accurate technology for writiing thoughts and ideas.

Digital is always stuck in the algorithms used to produce the standard. In this case it’s the “Red Book" CD-DA standard. It has been amended and improved over the years, but the original choice of sampling frequency (which determines maximum bandwidth and high frequency reproduction) and bit length (which determines dynamic range … the difference between the softest and the loudest sound) can't be changed. That is literally frozen in stone.

DVD sound standards include word sizes of 20 and 24 bits and also increases sample rate to as high as 192 kHz. However, DVD music discs have not found a wide market except for movies and video. LPs, on the other hand, are enjoying a renaissance of demand and supply.

Something else new did develop in the digital marketplace over the last forty years. That something is digital music downloads: iTunes for example, or Pandora, Napster, and Rhapsody. There is more flexibility in this technology because it depends on computer software and these programs can be updated easily and cheaply, even on old hardware.

However, due to the limitations and cost of bandwidth, this technology was rooted in a processed called compression. That’s a mathematical method to squeeze the bandwidth out of the music to make it easier to transmit quickly over narrow bandwidth connections like the early internet. Many, such as iTunes, allow the user to set the level of compression when the user is recording their music and multiple levels of compression may be available from the source allowing the listener to decide the trade-off between quality and quantity. However, the very essence of compression is to reduce something; and that something is fidelity or sound quality. They just hope you won't notice. In fact, they are carefully designed to limit your noticing, and actually do a pretty good job of that.

These compressions were typically “lossy” which means they lose fidelity. Through ingenious design they mostly threw away aspects of the music that you wouldn’t notice anyway, but still they purposely lost fidelity to save bandwidth and storage space. The music is converted and recorded. It is then reconverted on playback restoring some of the music quality. Programs that perform these transformations are called CODECs("coder-decoder") Lossless compression doesn't eliminate any of the musical essence, but lossy compression methods abound since they are better are reducing total file size.

Since much of this listening audience use simple ear buds and listen in noisy locations like vehicles and the street, maybe no one noticed the loss of quality. But some did and some still do.

It is in pursuit of perfection for quality listening environments such as home theaters and quality hi-fi systems that the analog record never lost favor. In fact, it is enjoying a great resurgence. Can those music aficionados really tell a difference in the music quality? Well, the answer can be yes, although often it is more imagined than actually experienced.

In any case, more people are buying LPs than true high-resolution 24 bit/192 kHz files, the ones that can sound better than CD-quality FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) or Apple Lossless files.

Well-recorded old and new LPs, played on a decent turntable, are capable of delivering high-resolution sound. Of course LPs are more likely to be played on a turntable at home, where the listener might actually be able to hear the difference between high- and standard-resolution recordings.

Listening to high-resolution files in noisy environments like a train, car, bus, or plane is like eating gourmet food on a roller coaster. Savoring sound quality is next to impossible in those places, at home with a decent audio system you're more likely to hear the difference high resolution can make.

A record manufacturing company is located a few blocks from Grand Central Station in Manhattan, an example of the modern, high end record producers. I visited them back when I was working in New York, and was given an informative tour.

Their record cutting machine, the Neumann VMS 80,shown in the photo at the start of this article, was described by their engineer as the "Ferrari of lathes." It was built in 1982, but has been rebuilt twice and has many tweaks. This machine cuts the groves in the lacquer master used to press the vinyl records.

I learned that, when inspecting freshly cut grooves with the microscope, one does not to speak while hovering directly over the master, you don't want to contaminate its pristine surfaces. On a bad day the grooves might take on a "streaky, rocky and jagged" appearance. When that happens they’ll have to do it again and cut a fresh lacquer disc. Working with physical tools like the lathe, makes a hands-on aspects of record cutting incredibly satisfying. They just bought an old analog Nagra tape recorder when I was there, and I noted the difference in workflow when not using computers. They weren't interested in the latest technological gadgets, often using older equipment from the golden age of analog audio.

LP mastering engineers are people who literally transform sound into physical wave forms; these engineers are sculptors of sound. To be good at their job they have to be attuned to the machine and materials they're working with. The temperature, humidity, the quality of the blank lacquer discs, and the cutting stylus all potentially affect the sound of the finished product, the LP. So working in the analog "domain" requires extreme attention to detail, as the smallest errors can spell disaster.

I am reminded of other skilled craftsmen who work with their hands from machinist to welders. Their craft is demonstrated in the quality of their work and the products they produce. Reminds me of the small town welder that repaired Robert Pirsig’s chain guard. Robert didn’t want him to try welding the thin metal for fear it would simply melt away, but the craftsmanship (and “quality”) of the tradesman yielded a perfect repair. That was the kind of quality Pirsig was talking about in ZAMM, and it is equally obvious in these workmen with lacquer and vinyl discs.

This level of care and attention to sonic details matches the original efforts of the musicians in their recording studios with multiple takes and late night mixing sessions. Good music doesn’t come from a computer, but from a beating heart and the warm blood flowing in the veins of creator and recorder both. It is no wonder that sonic critics refer to the music from LPs as “warmer” than the cold medium of digital.

This doesn’t mean that digital music work isn’t challenging. Conquering digital formats and the challenges of digital music are different, but still demanding. But even with the best engineering, the vinyl's sound always destroys the peak-limited, 16-bit CD version, it kills it dead. There are very few times when the CD is better than the LP. Dynamically uncompressed music on digital formats like CD and downloads is possible, but just not likely in the current marketplace. I am not an anti-digital guy, but you gotta really love vinyl.

It isn't all doom and gloom for those that rate both music quality and convenience with portability, however. Both SONY and a new comer — to music devices, not music — Neal Young have new, high fidelity, mobile, digital devices announced. The price is high, but for those that care, I assume it is worth it. The high resolution and high quality music catalogs are still a bit sparse, but if these higher priced players become a success, that is sure to follow. So keep tuned.

Nowadays, most vinyl releases are cut from digital masters, so there may be no escape for the purest, but the care and effort that goes into high quality vinyl production can restore some of that human warmth to the music.

Metro

“Metro.” Short for Metropolitan State College. That’s what it was called when I attended in the 70s. There was some confusion with a college in Minnesota — I think. So the phrase “of Denver” was added in 1990.

Most recently the name was updated after a long and tortuous process to the very predictable “Metropolitan State University of Denver.” Although the school only offers Master’s degrees in a relatively small number of disciplines, the administration was anxious to move from “college” to “university” status.

In fall 2010, the university began offering master's programs in teacher education and accounting, with social work to begin in fall 2011. On April 18, 2012, Metro State achieved university status. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper approved the changing of the name of Metropolitan State College of Denver to Metropolitan State University of Denver, effective July 2012.

It is a relatively new school, established in 1965 by the state legislature. The decidedly non-traditional college was originally teaching from classrooms located throughout downtown Denver in office buildings and rented space. It was during this time period that I attended. I went part-time, at night, and took seven years to complete my degree. I typically took one class at a time, so getting from classroom to classroom was not as much of an issue for me as finding parking. I don’t know how full-time students were able to get from class to class quickly, since they could be blocks, if not over a mile apart.

The founding concept of Metro was that people from all walks of life could have a chance at a college education. By design, Metro State is required to be accessible to all, which is why it consistently has some of the lowest tuitions of four-year Colorado colleges and universities. Approximately a third of the student body are students of color. MSU Denver was the first university to allow DREAMers to have a chance at higher education. It made national headlines.

It was partially due to this openness, that I first started attending there. Upon arrival in Colorado after I got out of the Navy, I applied for admission to the University of Colorado in Boulder. Due to my very poor grades in my first year at the Montana School of Mines, I was denied admission. The counselor recommended I go over to Metro and raise my GPA before reapplying. Metro, by charter, had to accept all Colorado High School graduates, regardless of grades, and apparently that loose admissions policy applied to me too.

Upon enrolling at Metro, I found a school that had small class sizes, was focused on teaching and students rather than research and publications, and that typically had professors who worked directly in industry. The student body was quite different too. The average age was in the late twenties, if I recall correctly, which was years older than the average age at Colorado’s leading universities. I remember a talk by a UC professor who referred to her students as "kids." They weren't kids at Metro

There were no fraternities or sororities, no organized sports, and no dormitories. The average student was employed and often married and raising a family. The focus was on getting a good education rather than the party-hardy reputation of CU.

In 1976, while I was still in school, the Auraria Higher Education Campus was established. This added a unique location for Metro on the new Auraria Campus, an educational facility located next to downtown Denver. The campus houses facilities of three separate universities and colleges: the University of Colorado Denver (UCD), Community College of Denver, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. They share certain facilities such as gyms, library, student union, medical facilities, and parking.

The campus also houses Auraria Higher Education Center, the administrative body that handles parking, maintenance, and janitorial services. The campus is located southwest of downtown, on the east side of the South Platte River and south of Cherry Creek, near the site of the original Auraria mining camp settlement of 1859. To this day, new buildings are still being constructed. A four-star hotel was recently added where students in the service industry curriculum take practical classes in the state-of-the-art kitchen and hotel facilities.

The Auraria Campus is also home to Tivoli Union, a former brewery that dates back to the 1870s. It now goes by the name Tivoli Student Union, serving as a lounge and cafeteria, and housing a significant number of student organizations for all three schools. The 9th Street Park borders the Campus to the west, housing community outreach programs, academic departments, and other campus offices as well as a fast-food restaurant in the Mercantile building.

When I first enrolled in Metro, they evaluated my previous college and military training, and gave me 36 credits, primarily for my Navy electronics training. At that time the requirement for a Bachelor’s degree was something like 132 credits. Even though I got considerable credit for my previous studies, they required me to take a total of 158 credits to graduate. On a positive note, they didn’t make me retake some basic electronics courses. I started out as a sophomore.

(All these numbers are from memories that are over 40 years old. I may have a few mistakes in those values. Plus the school converted from quarter credits to semester credits during my enrollment, which changed everything. My point is that, even though I got a lot of transfer credits, they required I take additional classes. I guess that was good for them. They got paid for all those courses. But it was good for me too, I suppose. I took a lot of different and varied classes to get that B.S. degree.)

Another reason I needed so many credits to graduate was because I sort of “started over” in the mathematics area, taking a non-credit "Introduction to College Algebra" and "Introduction to College Trigonometry." Many schools these days give credit for these classes which, in my day, were called “bone head” courses and were non-credit.

It was a good move, however, as I was then able to succeed nicely in "Introductory Calculus" and other following math classes.

When I first started at Metro, it was a quarter-based system. Each term was ten weeks in length and the fourth “quarter” was a summer term. Part way through my attendance, they switched to semester measure with fifteen week terms. All my credits were adjusted accordingly. One issue with semesters is that the summer term is often shortened and accelerated. Since, with only one exception, I took the summers off, that didn’t matter to me and it was easier to plan two semesters rather then try to get the required classes in a three-quarter schedule.

I needed the summer break from studying, working, and raising a family. I would often take a long vacation during these months. The one exception was the summer I took Physics. It didn't go well due to the accelerated pace, I got behind in the work, and I had to take a short vacation in the mountains that I studied about twelve hours a day for a long weekend to recover. I ended up getting an A, but it was touch and go for a while there. I never tried another summer class.

As I approached graduation, I had completed most of my major and minor requirements, and just needed a bunch of liberal arts and general studies classes to finish. I took a leave of absence from work and took 22 semester hours, full-time. (Actually a heck of a lot more than full-time, which was 16 hours.)

It was a lot easier to complete that heavy schedule without the distractions of work. Linda was a great help at home and I actually breezed through that final term. I got straight A’s in all my classes except one. I got a B in a one-credit course that was a preliminary to the final keystone course called “Senior Project.” So my final GPA was 3.97, and I graduated Summa Cum Laude. Not bad for a guy that couldn't get admitted to CU due to bad grades!

When I first started at Metro, I was teaching at the Electronics Technical Institute (ETI) in Denver. My first professor at Metro was Mel Capehart. He did not have a Ph.D., only a Master’s in Electronics Engineering, yet he was the department head. A dedicated teacher, he had been the Technical Director (top teacher) at ETI before I worked there. I didn’t work for him at ETI since he was a bit before my time, but he knew who I was. I was very impressed with his teaching style and preparation, and it had a lot to do with how I taught after that experience.

I had him several more times and most significant were the insights he gave me into Fourier’s Transform methods. He also taught me that an instructor needs to prepare for three hours for every hour of lecture. He focused on deriving equations rather than memorizing them. All ideas that have served me well since then. And you students thought studying was hard. Teachers often study harder.

I told Mel that I had tried to get into CU and was advised to go to Metro to raise my GPA and then come back. I told him I had liked it at Metro and I stayed and graduated. Years later, he told me that he had used that story a hundred times when talking to prospective students, and that I was more famous than I realized, although I doubt he had used my full name. Still it was nice to have a professor of that caliber talking about me!

After I received my Master’s Degree a couple of years later from the University of Colorado, he hired me to teach at Metro. My formal title was “Adjunct Instructor,” and I taught at Metro for about three years part-time while working for IBM in Disk Drive Engineering. Mostly I taught Digital Engineering and Circuit Design, a subject I enjoyed greatly. I still have all the class notes and considered, at one time, writing a text book.

After joining IBM’s Technical Education in 1985, I resigned from Metro, only to be asked back to represent IBM on Metro’s "Industry Advisory Council." In that position I made recommendations on curriculum and other technical matters for their School of Technology and was a member of that committee into the twenty-first century. While there I worked on accreditation by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). Also the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program accreditation by ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. We dealt with graduation requirements, new courses and programs, capital equipment budgets, and issues such as women in engineering. It was always pleasant to return to the Metro campus to deal with these scholastic concerns.

With that background, you can see that it was a rather special experience last month when I sat in the same great hall in the Denver Convention Center that I had graduated from some forty years earlier and watched my son receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. (Dietetics is the health field that focuses on the interaction between nutrition and health. Not to be confused with the book by L. Ron Hubbard.)

The program for that graduation listed Mel Capehart as professor emeritus. He has recently died. I hadn’t seen him for the last fifteen or so years, and I was sad to learn of his passing. So much of my teaching style and professional success was directly related to his mentoring.

And how is Metro doing these days? Well, it was a difficult time as they tried to chose a new name. Research showed that the term “Metropolitan” was the most important part of the school’s name and reputation as an open school for non traditional students. “Denver” was the next most important part of the name since it is located in downtown. Including both of the those words in the title reduced the possible names.

In addition, the University of Denver wanted to maintain clear name recognition and fought against such titles as “Denver State University” as too confusing. So "MSU of Denver" was finally chosen. Only after this decision did the administration realize that MSUD is already a known acronym for Maple Syrup Urine Disease. (And you thought you had problems at work.) With such a long name, a good abbreviation is welcome. "MSU of Denver" seems to have won out.

So MSU of Denver it is. Again, how are they doing these days? Splendidly. As of 2009, the institution had the second-largest enrollment of undergraduates of any college in Colorado. With 56 majors and 82 minors, the university is noted for a wide array of liberal arts and science programs as well as teacher education, business, aviation, and criminal justice programs. Metro State has an enrollment of over 23,000 students.

With a beautiful campus right next door to the high rising building of the core of Denver, it is the first choice of many Coloradans looking to improve themselves with education and job training. Located in downtown Denver, adjacent to Speer Boulevard and Colfax Avenue, it is convenient for those who split time between college and work.

Although still focused on education and teaching, athletics has been added to the school. Metro State's women's soccer team won the Division II National Championship in 2004 and 2006; the men's basketball team won the Division II National Championship in 2000 and 2002.

There are a couple of fraternities and several sororities on campus, but it is still a school focused on opportunity and study for serious and mature students. It is a school where honor societies outnumber fraternities and sororities and a campus with the most diverse population of any school in Colorado with 32.8% of the student body persons of color, of the full-time faculty members, 23 percent are professors of color, and an average student body age of 26. Forty-one percent of the students attend full time.

While I went on to graduate with Master’s degrees from both the University of Colorado and, most recently, the University of Denver, Metro has been and continues to be the school I’m the most fond of. I find myself going back to the campus on a regular basis to photograph the modern new buildings as well as the repurposed historical buildings on 9th street and the Tivoli Brewery now converted to the AHEC Student Center.

And now that it is my younger son's alma mater, that only increases my regard for this institution. It is possible that my niece will move to Colorado and attend their nursing program. Metro continues to be a major part of my life, and that makes me glad. I really like the place and recommend it highly.

From Super Hawk to Black Bomber

Following the wild success of small Honda motorbikes during the 60’s, many riders moved to larger models from the Japanese manufacturer and specialist at producing reliable and complex motorcycles. There were the 125s and the 150s, but the larger family of 250cc and 305cc bikes were the big boys from the Japanese company.

These bigger bikes were divided into three types, Dreams, Scramblers, and Hawks. The Dreams were considered, at least by Honda, as touring machines. With their unusual pressed steel frames and complicated, leading link front suspension, they had a little bit of motor scooter in their DNA from the flared fenders to the fully enclosed headlight nacelle. The 16 inch wheels on the Dream made them closer to the ground than either the Scrambler which had 19 inch and the Hawk with 18 inch wheels.

The Scramblers and the Hawks were more like traditional motorcycles with their tubular steel frames and telescoping front forks. They did share a lot with the Dreams, however.

One item Hawks shared with Dreams was the fact that the engine replaced part of the frame. The usual down tube in the front of the frame was eliminated by bolting to the top and bottom of the engine. The thirty degree forward cylinder angle not only lowered the overall motorcycle height, but also made this frame design practical and possible.

Only Scramblers had complete frames with a vertical down tube in front of the engine. They also added a skid plate and reinforced handle bars as well as high pipes to complete the off-road package. In addition, at 52.4 inches, the Scramblers had the longest wheel base of the three models. Super Hawks had the shortest wheelbase at an even 51 inches.

These Hondas all had two-cylinder engines with the pistons moving in the same plane, a design usually called “twins.” The light weight aluminum engine had a single overhead cam driven by a chain with a manual tensioner mechanism. The short connection from camshaft to valves allowed for very high RPMs compared to push rod designs from American and British manufacturers. The engines were slightly over-square with a 60mm bore and a 54mm stroke.

All together a very advanced design built with great precision and care. The net result was that these relatively small, 250-305cc engines were strong competitors against motorcycles with twice or more displacement. Another result was a very reliable engine with minimum maintenance requirements. There was less vibration and shaking in these designs. These features became readily obvious when you hopped on a Honda and rode.

They all had four-speed transmissions and a multi-disc, wet plate clutch. Primary drive was a single row chain as was the secondary. Drum brakes all around with twin-leading-shoe on the front and a single-leading-shoe on the rear. Pretty typical for that era whether from a Japanese manufacturer or any other motorcycle built in America or Britain.

All three larger motorcycle types produced by Honda shared the same basic model of power plant. They looked pretty much identical from the outside with their wide cylinder head making the top of the engine look larger. However, internally and out of sight, the Hawks did one thing decidedly different. While the Dreams had what is called a 360° timing, the Hawks had 180°, a crankshaft layout shared by the Scrambler line.

These angles are a reference to the relationship between the two pistons in these twin-piston engines and the four-stroke cycle. A four stroke engine goes through four cycles in its up and down motion: 1) power (down), 2) exhaust (up), 3) intake (down), and 4) compression (up). Therefore, each cylinder only fires once every two revolutions of the crankshaft and flywheel assembly. There are 720 degrees in a complete four-stroke cycle. (This part is true of all four-stroke engines, regardless of manufacturer.)

A 360° engine has the pistons running together, up at the same time and down at the same time; but the cylinders alternate their ignition. When one piston is firing and being pushed down by the force of the expanding gasses, the second piston is coming down on the intake stroke pulled by the crankshaft. This balances the timing of the firing equally from the left side to the right side and back to left. Sort of 1 - 2 - 3 - 4.

This balances out the power impulses and makes it feasible to use a single carburetor for both cylinders, simplifying design and tuning as well as lowering complexity and cost.

The Hawks, on the other hand, with 180° timing, have pistons in opposition. That is, when one is up, the other is down. This causes the firing to occur on a non-symmetrical “fire, fire, intake, intake” strokes. Sort of 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 with the emphasis on 1 and 2 instead of 1 and 3. Having one piston traveling down while the other piston travels up balances out the vertical forces from Newton’s laws, but now the impulses aren't balanced and dual carbs are required for each cylinder to breathe equally.

The different timing produced the unique exhaust sound particular to the Hawks, but also created a complex rocking force on the crankshaft. Honda engines, unlike most their competition, used three main bearings on the crankshaft, so the rocking force was well handled. However the twist or torsional forces on the crankshaft were not balanced. Still, with such small pistons, the vibrational forces were relatively small in both designs, although a distinct buzz could be felt in the handlebars, especially at high rpm.

(Typical of most four-stroke engines, the predominant vibration mode is at twice the rpm. Hence the buzz feeling. The very high rpm capability of these engines raises the frequency of the vibrations.)

There were other differences in the Hawk’s engines that improved performance including a higher compression ratio than the Dream engine (10:1 vs. 8.2:1) and cam timing, as well as the dual carburetors. Higher engine red-line make the Hawks good performers. Capable of 9,000 rpm, it could propel the bike at over 100 mph; as fast as British parallel twins with much higher displacements, and with surprising reliability for such a complex design. Nine thousand rpm was not the norm for motorcycles of this period, and was one factor in putting this relatively small size engine in the same class as larger twins from Great Britain. While the Dream 305 produced 24 hp at 8,000 rpm, the Super Hawk hit 28 at 9,000. Doesn’t seem like that much difference, but the 305 Dream weighted in at 372, the Super Hawk was 21 pounds lighter, yielding a top speed of 104.6 according to a Cycle World review in the May ’62 issue.

The Super Hawk is now regarded as the first modern Japanese motorcycle that established the paradigm that we still operate under now, more than fifty years later. Perhaps you did meet the nicest people on a Honda … a 50cc motorbike, but those you met on these hot rods were not just the nicest, but some of the fastest too.

Although you could argue that Honda built a 250cc model to meet certain racing categories, in the US, the 305cc was the most popular model by far. The 305cc CB77 was called a Super Hawk, with the extra superlative an indication of the slightly larger displacement.

The Super Hawk's design is not an accident by any means. In saying "design," I don't isolate pure function — the bike's mechanical prowess — from its other aspects. One need only to take a good look at this model in order to sense that the aesthetic quality is inseparable and, perhaps, paramount in securing the Super Hawk's place in motorcycle history. (Check out the large photographs included at the bottom of this article to make your own determination of "style.")

If you are not convinced, consider what Soichiro Honda — Mr. Honda, himself — had to say on the subject of design and, in particular, on how design relates to his motorcycles. This shows that Honda's boss and leading racing proponent was also interested in how a motorcycle looked in addition to its performance and reliability.

I mentioned a little while ago that design is fashion. What I meant was the psychology of fashion that is the mental process that takes place among consumers when they see somebody doing a different thing, they also want to do so.

Balance is important for design, yet if balance is over emphasized the result might be a withered one. There is a contradiction between [the passiveness] and the strength of beauty, accompanied by a single direction. This is the hard point.

At any rate, the design of the motor vehicle must be a symphony appreciated visually. As the symphony would be unbalanced by only a single unordinary tone of the trombone, the design must be considered one by one without breaking the balance, such as tires, steering handle, and others. Moreover, each part within the balance has to express its respective unique design. This is of the most importance.

This Super Hawk was the top performing motorcycle that Honda produced from 1961 to 1965. It was a very popular bike with riders back then as well as vintage restorers now. The list of famous Super Hawk riders includes the bike Robert Pirsig rode in his compelling road story, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance; and — although they held a fondness for Triumphs — Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood rode Super Hawks too. Even Henry Winkler — The Fonz — was photographed on a Hawk.

The engine design was based on Honda’s experience in Grand Prix racing in Europe, but it was still a rather mild copy of the exotic race bike gracing the European tracks. Somewhat quietly, in 1965, Honda went a step larger with their 450cc twin design. This machine, the CB450, was the first instance of a production motorcycle with dual overhead cams. The 450 moved the cylinders to a vertical position and added a downtube, releasing the engine from the requirement to be part of the frame. The most radical feature was the valve springing. Instead of the conventional coil springs, it used “torsion bars” — rods of steel that twisted to provide the spring effect.

While the Super Hawk was quite quick for its size and able to run with many of the British 650s, the CB450 pushed the performance envelope even further and reinforced Honda's reputation as a manufacturer of technically innovative and sophisticated motorcycles.

This largest yet power plant offering yielded 43 bhp at 8,500 rpm with a weight of 425 pounds. Cycle World Magazine tests in September of 1965 reported just over a ton at 102mph and a 15.2 second quarter mile. Like the Hawk it had a 180° crank and dual carburetors. The carbs were constant velocity design, new for that time period, but destined to become more common on newer bikes of all brands. It had the same 18 inch wheels as the 305 Super Hawk, but had a seat height of 31.5 inches, one and one-half an inch taller. The slight incline of the Super Hawk cylinders allowed for a bit lower seat height.

Although Honda didn’t use the name, the first CB450s quickly earned the nickname of “Black Bomber.” (In Canada, the model was referred to as the "Hellcat.") CB77 Super Hawks could be had in black, blue, red, and even white. The CB450 was only manufactured in black or blue at the beginning. The first year’s model, called the K0 in recognition of Honda’s nomenclature, had the same high humped gas tank as the Super Hawk. That led some commentators to dislike the overall style, although I had no problem with it. The new DOHC bike also shared the oval shaped, combination speedo and tach that was emblematic of the Super Hawk.

There is a style issue on the K0, however, that I don’t like. The side covers are a wrap around the air filter and typically painted a light, contrasting color that drew attention to what were not very attractive pieces of metal. To make things worse, they carried a large label that not only indicated “450” but also listed the Air Cleaner maintenance schedule in miles and kilometers. Not cool.

Model Years and Honda K Numbers

One of the confusing things about early Hondas is the question of what year any given model was. Honda was not using annual model-year changes when the first bikes were imported to the US. Changes and improvements were made on a running basis with no holding back until the next year. When significant changes were made, the different models variations were sometimes referred to as the "early" model and the "late" model. This is true of the Dreams and Hawks produced in the sixties. Because of this, it is sometimes difficult to determine a specific year of manufacture for early Hondas.

This system of running changes was used up until 1968, when the K numbering convention was introduced. Basically, the first version of a model was the K0 with subsequent model variations being assigned sequential K numbers: K1, K2, and so on.

In September of 1973, beginning with the 1974 model year, Honda adopted an official model-year policy. Even so, the K number designations were used through 1976.

The 444cc twin was a running portfolio of Honda’s engineering capacity. Four caged roller bearings supported the crankshaft, and primary drive was by spur gears. The valves were seated by torsion bar valve springs — short lengths of steel splined into tubular guides. Tight valve clearances and effective mufflers aided quiet running. The 450 also boasted a pair of constant velocity carburetors, a first on a production motorcycle. It shared the basic clutch design and front and rear brake specifications with the earlier Super Hawk.

Honda claimed the short stroke engine would develop 43 horsepower at the crankshaft and could reach 112mph. Cycle World recorded a top speed of 102mph in its August 1965 review. In contrast with most other bikes of the time, which pulled strongest at lower rpms, Honda’s 450 produced its best power at over 6,000 rpm. Reliability was excellent, provided you remembered to warm up the engine and changed the oil regularly — the service manual suggested 1,500-mile intervals. The horizontally split cases didn’t leak, and the electric starter always worked, hot or cold.

Contemporary testers noted several faults, including poor rear shocks, vibration, and the aforementioned need for a longish warm up to ensure a sufficient supply of oil to the top end. Over-revving the bike when cold could cause premature engine failure. Some also noted the bike’s oddly spaced gear ratios and the lack of a 5-speed transmission, a feature that would finally come a year later. And at a dry weight of 412 pounds, the K0 was heavier than a contemporary Triumph 650, which weighed in around 365 pounds dry.

These technical issues, later to be resolved, set aside, the Black Bomber pushed the performance envelope beyond its predecessor Super Hawk and firmly established Honda as a leading producer of advanced technology and high performance motorcycles. However, the bike never achieved great market success, and it would have to wait for its descendent, the Honda CB750 Four and the following Gold Wing designs to truly cement Honda as the greatest motorcycle technology company of all time; a reputation that has also spilled over to the Honda motor car products. It is a reputation of performance, innovation, and reliability that was honestly earned by such products as the CB77 and the CB450.

In February 1968, the K0 was superseded by the K1, with a 5-speed gearbox, a more conventionally shaped tank, a larger oil pump to aid warm up, and a longer wheelbase to improve handling. After the introduction of the CB750 Four in late 1968, the 450 twin was no longer Honda’s flagship, but continued through 1974 in an important role as a middle-weight street machine.

Not only did the K1 changed the fuel tank shape, but they replaced that ugly air filter cover with regular, bulbous side panels. These panels had a large, cast metal insignia with the numbers “450” prominent. Later versions changed the metal logo to add the initials “DOHC” to the displacement numbers, celebrating the unique valve design.

Since both the K0 and the K1 models had chrome side panels on the gas tank, they were an obvious transition from the matching Super Hawk design which was discontinued in 1967. (Check the pictures below which put the Black Bomber under the Super Hawk for comparison.) Vintage collectors prefer these first two models to the later designs because of the unique look. Personally, I like the K1 best because it maintains the Super Hawk styling but improved motor and transmission. The best of both worlds, although it still lacks a disc brake.

Honda changed the style again in the 1969 K2 CB450. The tank took on a new form and style, eliminating the chrome side panels and plastic emblem badges for a striped paint look that became the common design motif for Honda motorcycles through the seventies. It was in ’69 that Honda produced the first CB750 with this same new tank style. This new model of super bike took the focus off the CB450 Super Sport in a dramatic way. From then on the 450 was a sad sister to the more powerful and very successful four cylinder sibling.

However, the initial Honda CB750 had a single overhead cam construction. The venerable four didn't get dual overhead cams until 1979, almost 15 years after the first DOHC CB450. Black Bomber enthusiast will always have that fact to smile about.

Improvements in the engine and bike design accompanied the next version. Disc brakes were added to the K3 model in 1970. Other new features included a larger tail light, hinged gas cap, black-finished handlebar switches, fully rubber cushioned instruments replacing the old "oval" design, and restyled mufflers. The headlight shell and upper fork brackets were painted to match the tank and sidecover color. Gaiters were added to the front shock tubes to keep out dust and moisture.

In 1970 Honda color choices on various models also began to expand, moving beyond the traditional black, silver, candy red, or candy blue to include candy gold. Unfortunately, the original candy red and candy gold finishes are extremely vulnerable to sun fade. The candy blue Honda used is remarkably stable. The CB450 K3 was the last model to include significant engineering as well as styling changes. Most modifications through the CB450 K7 were minor and cosmetic only.

The CB450 was produced until the 1974 K7 model. The next year Honda produced the first Gold Wing, and the CB450 became a thing of the past. The date the “Bomber” went on sale is a dividing line in motorcycle history. Before that date, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers weren’t taken seriously in the world market. After that date, they were. The Bomber showed its competitors that Honda could not only match what other manufacturers were doing, it could go far beyond them in technological development.

Building on the advances of the Super Hawk, the Black Bomber led the way to future designs such as the CB750 and the Gold Wing. Remnants of the CB450 can still be seen in the latest products from Honda … if you know where to look. Once you figure out the best way to do something, there is no longer a need for change. Applies to motorcycles and to life too. Think about that for a while. As for me, I'm going for a ride. See yah!
